Volunteer at the Great Vic Bike Ride

Great Vic 2023 offers the unique opportunity to join a 9-day volunteering adventure from Orbost to Wonthaggi, experiencing all the best parts of Gippsland! To help make it easy, we provide all our volunteers with free transport, meals and accommodation.

Each day we travel to a new town, set up camp and help out up to 3,000 riders.

There are great places to see and things to do everywhere we go – it’s a fantastic way to experience some beautiful parts of Victoria.

When: Saturday 25 November – Sunday 3 December 2023

“No matter what your age you’ll walk away from the Great Vic with heaps of new friends, new skills and memories that will last a life time.”

Working with Children Check

At Bicycle Network, children are vital and active participants in our organisation, so we’re proud to have developed a Child Safe culture that promotes the wellbeing and safety of children. To support our Child Safe Policy, we require all team members on the Great Vic to have a valid Working with Children Check.

The State Government Victoria Working with Children Check website provides extensive information, including:

  • How to apply for a check
  • Information about who is exempt from the check
  • How to renew your check

Working with Children Checks are free of charge for volunteers.

You will be required to provide us with a copy of your Working with Children Check prior to volunteering.

VolunteerFAQs

Here are the answers to your most common questions.

If your question isn’t in the list, please email us for more information.

Volunteers have been the heart and soul of the Great Vic ever since its beginning in 1984 – and the event simply could not go ahead without them!

Benefits of volunteering
  • See some beautiful parts of Australia and use your free time to explore the towns we visit
  • Transport, meals and use of a tent on event are free of charge for volunteers
  • We have a diverse range of volunteer roles to apply for – there is something for everyone!
  • It will give you an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends
  • There is plenty of entertainment for volunteers to take part in, including live music, an outdoor cinema, rest day activities, an on-event volunteer celebration and much more!
  • You play an important part in helping over 3000 riders enjoy an iconic event!

Campsites are typically located on recreation reserves including ovals and surrounding parkland. Campsites are regularly maintained by the local councils as they are used throughout the year by the local communities. Please respect the campsites so we can leave them as we found them.

Volunteers will travel in either our volunteer bus or in an event vehicle. Your luggage will generally travel with you in the same vehicle.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided free of charge for volunteers on each day of the Great Vic (except breakfast and lunch on your arrival day and lunch on the final day).

On this year’s Great Vic, there are six meal options to choose from:

  • Standard
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • Gluten-free vegetarian
  • Gluten-free vegan

Please ensure you select your meal preference when you register.

Most volunteers will be working around 6-8 hours each day, depending on your role. The rest of your day can be spent doing whatever is most enjoyable for you. Whether it’s exploring the local towns, joining in the entertainment and activities, enjoying a drink in the bar or simply relaxing!

You will also have a rest day where you will have no volunteer hours – the perfect time to do some exploring and join in the fun activities that we have planned!

Absolutely – and to repay you for your volunteer time we will give you up to a 30% refund on your entry price. But be quick, there are a limited number of riding volunteer positions available. Learn more.

We will be running an information session prior to the event to help you prepare for your time on the Great Vic. The session will predominately cover general information about the event, rather than role specific information. It’s not mandatory, but it’s very worthwhile to attend for first time volunteers.

A Zoom link will also be shared closer to the session, for those who can’t attend in person.

Role-specific training will usually take place during the first day of the event, unless otherwise instructed by your team leader.
