Detour at Ballarat Road Bridge

Upgrade works to the Ballarat Road Bridge over the Maribyrnong River near Flemington Racecourse will close the outbound bike lane from next week until mid-February.

Detours are available.

The bridge connects Ballarat Road to Smithfield Road. Smithfield Road has an on-road bike lane in the outbound direction that is a direct route to Footscray.

The contractors have prepared a detour that enables riders to cross the river, however it requires a crossing of Smithfield Road.

An alternative that does not require a road crossing is to use the historic Lynches Bridge Stock Bridge just down river.

The works are part of the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade to revamp eight arterial roads across the west, repair and resurface 37 roads and strengthen seven structures, mostly bridges.

The Western Roads Upgrade is being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria in partnership with Netflow.

Among the improvements to the bridge will be strengthening to increase load capacity, upgraded safety barriers and new bridge bearings.
