Spotswood sewer squeeze

A major sewer project in Spotswood will put the squeeze on bike riders using Hyde Street from next week.

Both road riders and riders using the Hyde Street shared path will be impacted between the Mobil Refinery and the West Gate Bridge.

There will be lane closures on the road and the shared path will be narrowed because riders will share it with a by-pass sewer pipe.

The project is the North Yarra Deviation Sewer Relining, which involves relining one of Melbourne’s most important sewers.

The 85-year pipe carries about 20 per cent of Melbourne’s waste under the Stony Creek Backwash on its way to the Werribee Treatment Plant.

The 9-metre section will be by-passed, cleaned and relined to give it many more years of life.

For six months there will be an above ground by-pass pipe that will be located along the shared path.

While the bypass pumping line will be aligned on the existing Hyde St shared user path, space will still be available for riders to use the path – speeds should be reduced in this section and care taken at all times.

There may be occasions when riders will be asked to walk their bikes around worksites.

As well, one southbound lane will remain closed during bypass pumping line construction and welding – some disruption to cyclists can be expected. Traffic management will be place during this activity.

During relining work, traffic conditions leading to and at the intersection of Douglas Parade and Simcock Avenue will change to enable contraflow traffic around the existing manholes in the road. Traffic controllers will be on site and speeds will be reduced to 40km/h.

Project signage is in place and further signage will help to warn bike riders of the changes.
