Celebrating the contribution of our volunteers

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, Bicycle Network has acknowledged the generous contribution of our organisation’s long-serving volunteers by inducting nine new Life Members and nine Honour Board recipients during special ceremonies around the country yesterday.

Volunteers have been a vital pillar of Bicycle Network since its inception in 1975 and are involved in every aspect of the organisation. Whether serving on our board, helping on events and behaviour change programs, or in our office, volunteers are at the core of the organisation.

The Life Member and Honour Board awards are a recognition of the outstanding dedication of the volunteers who have been with the organisation over many years, some even 25 years.

Joan Horton, Benalla, was last night awarded Life Membership in recognition of her service to Bicycle Network for 27 years.

Ms Horton volunteered on the first Around the Bay in 1992, and has joined the team for the Easter Bike and Spring Bike rides, the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride, the Peaks Challenge series and has participated in every Super Tuesday count since 2007.

Ms Horton says she was surprised by the award but was humbled by the gesture.

“It was a great thank you and a positive acknowledgement of what I’ve contributed,” said Ms Horton.

Celebrations were also held in Hobart, where two local volunteers were inducted to the Honour Board.

Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards recognised the invaluable contribution of Bicycle Network's team of volunteers.

"Bicycle Network was founded on the selfless dedication and passion of many wonderful people such as our founding fathers in the 1970s and Great Vic pioneers in 1984. I think theyd be very proud that even though we’re much bigger now that same volunteer spirit is alive and thriving," Mr Richards said.

"Our volunteers mean the world to us. They’re contribution is incredible. They embody our values of commitment, honesty, inclusiveness and progressiveness.

Last night was a wonderful opportunity to say congratulations and thanks. It was also fantastic to spend some time with the families of our volunteers who sacrifice their time with their loved ones so that we can realise our dream of a nation of bike riders."
