Need somewhere to park your car while you ride?

This year, the long term car park will be located at Trafalgar, near to the finish site for nine and three-day riders. The long term car park is open at selected times on Sat 25 Nov, Thurs 30 Nov and Sun 3 Dec. If you need a lift from Trafalgar to the start site of your ride option, you’ll also need to book transport separately.

WARBY training rides

To help you get into the right gear for this year’s RACV Great Vic our WARBY (we are right behind you) team are putting on some training rides in the months leading up to the big event.

The rides give you a taste of the event before it begins – warm your legs up, meet other riders and get some handy tips from our WARBYs.

Four rides are being led by our WARBYs in Melbourne and Wodonga that take in some of the best bike riding routes the regions have to offer. Rides will be on a mix of roads and paths and riders can leave rides at the best point that suits them to get home.

Melbourne: Saturday 2 September

Where: Federation Square to Wattle Park and return. Meet at Federation Square on the concourse near Timeout Cafe for a pre-ride briefing.

What do I need?

Rides are around 40km – 60km and will take around six hours to complete. Please make sure you have the following with you:

  • Bike in good working condition
  • Helmet
  • Rain jacket, sun screen and appropriate clothing for the conditions
  • Money for emergencies (and coffee!)
  • MYKI card
  • Water, lunch and snacks sufficient for a six hour ride
  • A spare tube, pump and tools for basic repairs

E-Bike pricing

A single charge for an e-bike is $10 and can be purchased on event, as per our e-bike policy. Make sure you drop off your e-bike battery early to get the best possible charge, as unfortunately we are unable to charge e-bikes overnight. If you do choose to drop your e-bike battery off later in the afternoon, the team will still be happy to charge it for you, but will only be able to charge the battery until 15 minutes prior to the charging station closing time.

When do 2017 entries open?

When will I receive my registration kit?

You’ll receive your registration kit when you arrive at the campsite on arrival day, Saturday 25 November. There will be no riding on arrival day, so arrive at any time.

How do I purchase transport?

Transport options and availability can be viewed on the book now page.

On the day of the ride, you just need to bring your rider number, and you’re good to go.

How do I purchase camping upgrades and special meal options?

To purchase dome zone and stand up section or meal options, after you’ve already purchased an entry, log into our website using your Rider Number and email or date of birth, and then follow these steps:

  • Go to “My Activities”
  • Select “RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride 2017”
  • Scroll down to “Purchase additional items” and select “purchase”
  • You can then select the item you wish to buy, and proceed through to the check out as usual

How can I pay my balance?

We know there’s lots of costs in life, so if you sign up during the earlybird period, you’ll have the option to pay a $200 deposit, and pay the rest later. Unless payment is made prior, the remainder amount of your ticket for the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride will be automatically deducted from the credit card or bank account you paid your deposit from on 30 August. If you need to change your payment details or you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Can I take V/Line transport to the event?

V/Line have issued the following statement regarding catching their services to the event.

How do I prepare my bike for the transport?

In order to make loading and unloading of bikes as easy and quick as possible we require you to remove the pedals off your bike and also twist your handle bars in line with your bike frame.

How long do I need to be there before the bus?

Please be at the transport at least 30 minutes before it is departing.

Where is the car park?

This year’s long term car park is located in Trafalgar. The exact location will be available closer to the event.

When are the car parks open?

The carpark will be open during designated times on Saturday 25 November, Thursday 30 November and Sunday 3 December. Carparkopening times will be released closer to the event.

Is there a long term carpark at Wilson’s Prom?

Unfortunately, due to space restrictions within the National Park, there will not be a long term carpark at Tidal River.

On the road

What kind of support is provided on the road?

The beauty of the RACV Great Vic is that we’ve got your back when you’re on the road, with:

  • Water and toilets at all our designated rest areas
  • Lunch
  • Marshals and directional signage to help you along the route
  • SAG wagons to pick you up if something goes wrong
  • Traffic management and a dedicated marshal team to ensure safe riding conditions
  • Medical & mechanical support at rest areas and on the route

Can I ride a mountain bike?

The RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride is completed on sealed roads and is better suited to a hybrid or road bike. However, we love all bikes, and you are encouraged to use the type of bike that you are most comfortable and familiar with.

Can I bring my e-bike?

Yes! E-bikes are welcome on the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride, subject to our policy.

Will I have to ride along unsealed roads?

The RACV Great Vic rider route is planned along sealed roads. However, the route is subject to change due to a number of circumstances. Where possible, we will seek an alternate route that is sealed.

When does the route open?

The route opens at 6:30 am each morning and you must be gone from the campsite by 8:30 am at the latest.

Will I be riding on closed roads?

As the RACV Great Vic is a ride and not a race, road closures are minimal. However, there are some changed traffic conditions in place across the route to ensure the safety of all road users. It’s important to note that normal road rules apply at all times during the event, even when riding on closed roads. 

Are there bins along on route?

There will be bins at all rest stops along the route. However you are responsible for disposing of your rubbish appropriately while out on the road. Ensure to keep any rubbish you create on the road and dispose of at rest and lunch sites. We need your help to ensure that we look after this spectacular part of the Victoria.

Do I need ambulance cover?

Please ensure you have the appropriate Ambulance cover for the ride. You may need to be treated and transported by ambulance if you have a serious injury or illness.

What happens if I am injured or become unwell whilst on the road?

The RACV Great Vic is fully supported by a first aid contractor, who provide medical assistance on the route and at all campsites. If you are injured on the ride, please call Event Assistance. If you require an ambulance, please call 000 before phoning Event Assistance. For minor injuries, please see the first aid team located at all Rest Areas and campsites.

If you are transported to hospital as a result of your injuries or illness, and are discharged on the same day, Bicycle Network will arrange transportation to bring you back to the campsite. However, if you’re required to stay in hospital overnight and can no longer participate in the ride, you will have to organise your own transport home.

Bicycle Network can communicate with your emergency contact on your behalf and manage your luggage and bike at the campsite (The Hub) until it can be collected. Bicycle Network is not responsible for any costs associated with your retirement and departure from the ride. To ensure that these potential costs are covered, we recommend you consider travel insurance and/or signing up as a Bicycle Network member prior to the event.

At the campsite

What’s provided at the campsite?

There’s really no campsite like a RACV Great Vic campsite – it’s a pop-up town with everything you need, including:

  • Breakfast and dinner
  • A medical clinic
  • Daily live music and other entertainment
  • A ‘Main Street’ full of vendors, community groups and tourist information
  • Two licensed bars
  • Security
  • Mobile phone and e-bike charging station
  • The Hub Information Centre
  • Dishwashing and clothes washing stations
  • Free water refill stations
  • Luggage trucks to move your gear each day

Where will we be camping?

Campsites are typically located on recreation reserves including ovals and surrounding parkland. Campsites are regularly maintained by the local councils as they are used throughout the year by the local communities. Specific campsite information will be available closer to the event.

Will there be pre-ride camping available on Friday night?

To give you the best RACV Great Vic experience, we want to make sure the campsite is fully completed before you come on site, so from 2017 we will no longer be offering pre-ride camping. The campsite will officially open on Saturday 25 November at 9.00am.

If you would like to camp at Wilson’s Prom in the lead up to the event, you can make a booking via the Parks Victoria website. However, whilst we will make every effort to accommodate riders, you may be required to move your tent once we transform the campground into an RACV Great Vic campsite. Please respect and follow the directions of the campsite team.

How do I move my luggage from site to site each day?

We provide a luggage transfer service, which is included in your ticket. Each day, you’ll be required to load your luggage into our luggage trucks, and unload at the next site. Take note of your luggage truck number, so you don’t have to search through thousands of bags!

What’s my luggage allowance?

Each RACV Great Vic rider is allocated 20kg of luggage. This can be either 1x 20kg bag or 2x 10kg bags. For the safety of all RACV Great Vic team and attendees, baggage weight checks will be conducted on arrival to the event, and penalties will apply for overweight bags.

Can I charge my phone?

Worried about your phone or device battery dying while on the Great Vic Bike ride. Don’t worry! ChargeSpot will be on site at every stop to keep you charged up. There is limited spots so pre-book your unlimited charging now and ensure you stay connected!

Is the campsite accessible?

Every RACV Great Vic campsite is fully accessible and we have a disabled toilet / shower facility on site. However, please be advised that due to the nature of the sites we camp on, some sites may be uneven, or in wet conditions ground may be very soft. If you require special assistance and/or access to disabled facilities please nominate this on your registration form.

Can my family or friends drop me off and pick me up from the RACV Great Vic start / finish sites?

Yes! absolutely. There will be a designated public pick up / drop off point for event participants at both the start and finish site.

What will I be eating on the RACV Great Vic?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided each day of the RACV Great Vic (except breakfast Day 1, lunch Day 6 and lunch Day 9).

I have a specific dietary requirement. Can you cater for me?

On this year’s RACV Great Vic, there are five meal options to choose from:

  • Standard
  • Vegetarian
  • Gluten-free
  • Gluten-free vegetarian
  • Vegan

Please ensure you select your meal preference upon registration (gluten-free options attract a $100 surcharge, vegan option attracts a $150 surcharge).

Does the ride cater for riders with allergies?

If you have an allergy, it is your responsibility to bring any appropriate medication. Bicycle Network has taken reasonable measures to ensure the meals and foods are free of allergens, but cannot guarantee this.

In 2017, RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride meals will be produced without the inclusion of peanuts and other tree nuts. However, whilst reasonable measures are taken to ensure meals don’t contain nuts, all meals are processed in a factory containing nuts and may contain traces of nuts.

All participants are responsible for their own health and wellbeing so bring your medication if you are affected by allergens.

What if I have an existing medical condition?

If you currently take any medication or have any existing medical conditions, you must bring your own medication with you, and we strongly encourage that you check with your physician before the ride to make sure that you are well prepared.

If you have medication you wish the first aid team to carry please bring these to the Clinic BEFORE 8 am each day. Medication should be in a labelled waterproof bag e.g a Ziplock bag, please include your name, rider number and type of medication.

If you require a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea we recommend a battery powered unit (as continuous power during the night is unable to be provided), and our first aid team will transport it and charge the battery during the day.

CPAP machines MUST have WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS about how to charge them. Please note CPAP units must be picked up again  before 8.30 pm in the evening

What bike security is provided?

Whilst our campsites are monitored throughout each day and night by our security team, we are unable to provide secure bike parking for individual bikes, and as such, we encourage you to protect your bikes from being misplaced by chaining them to a fixed object within the campsite (fence post, etc.) or by locking multiple bikes together close to your tent.

What happens if I am injured or become unwell whilst at campsite?

The RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride is fully supported by the EventAid Team, who provide medical assistance and support both on the route and at the campsites. If you are injured or become unwell at the campsite, please visit the EventAid clinic on site. If you are unable to visit the clinic, please call Event Assistance for further assistance. If you require an ambulance, please call 000 before phoning Event Assistance.

If your injury or illness prevents you from riding for three consecutive days, or if your illness is infectious, you will be asked to retire from the event, and if you are required to retire due to illness/injury, you will have to organise your own transport home (including for your bike and luggage). Bicycle Network can communicate with your emergency contact on your behalf and in some situations, can transport you to a nearby train station or regional centre (Please note: Transport cannot be guaranteed as it is subject to campsite location/circumstances).

Bicycle Network is not responsible for any costs associated with your retirement and departure from the ride. To ensure that these potential costs are covered, we recommend you consider travel insurance and/or signing up as a Bicycle Network member prior to the event.

After the event

Lost Property 

If you believe you’ve lost something, you can visit The Hub Information Centre during the ride. After the event, please call Bicycle Network on 03 8376 8888 the week and report your item with a detailed description.
According to our policy, all items that are unhygienic are disposed of immediately after the event. All other items are retained for three weeks. After this time, we donate or dispose of all unclaimed items.
