Regional Parks to extend bike routes

Two parks in Melbourne’s North West will expand bike facilities in the region.

The new Kororoit Creek Regional Park at Deanside, west of Caroline Springs on the Kororoit Creek, will extend the Kororoit Creek Trail and provide new local trail through the 260 hectares of open space.

And the Toolern Regional Park near Melton will expand the exiting park to accommodate growth in the region and extend the existing 3.5 km shared path network.

The two projects are part of the $315M Suburban Park Program which will add or improve 6,500 hectares of parklands.

A draft plan for the Kororoit Creek Park is out for consultation (here).

You can take the survey and make a submission until May 15.

Plans will be finalised in the third quarter of this year with work starting late in 2022, subject to land acquisition.

There is a video on the page that shores the potential trail network and three new bridges over the Kororoit Creek.

Recent community surveys showed strong support for a connected netwok of trails through the park.

A Parks Victoria draft strategic plan outlines the direction the development is proposed to take.

"The park is close to various places of community interest, such schools and community hubs, and will be well connected to the surrounding trail network which connects these places," the draft says.

"Shared paths will be located on the northern and southern sides of the Kororoit Creek which will eventually extend north to the Melton Highway and south to the Port Phillip Bay.

"There will be outstanding recreation and educational opportunities for visitors to enjoy amongst some of the highest quality Natural Temperate Grasslands and Growling Grass Frog habitat in Victoria.

"Significant Aboriginal and European cultural heritage values have been recorded in the park, particularly within the creek corridor, and will be protected.

"Where appropriate, the knowledge and stories behind these cultural and environmental values which create the park’s unique landscape and identity will be celebrated as part of the visitor experience.
