Mount Alexander Road closure for tram works

Sections of Mount Alexander Road through Travencore and Moonee Ponds will be closed for tram works in early January.

The road, which is an important bike route, will be closed in two sections from Dean Street to Sydney Street (including the intersection at Ormond Road) and South Street to Mooltan Street from 8pm, Monday, 3 January to 5am, Tuesday 18 January 2022.

Regular riders on the route may have some favoured options for detours. Others may prefer to take the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail between Travencore and Dean Street.

Traffic management and signage will direct traffic.

Work will involve digging up the tracks and removing rubble, installing new tram tracks, tram powerlines, electrical assets and underground cables, and asphalting and line marking the road.

As well as the Mt Alexander Road closure, the intersection of Ormond Road and Mount Alexander Road will be closed from 8pm Monday 3 January to 5am Saturday 8 January 2022.

Mooltan Street will be closed at Mount Alexander Road. Access via Ormond Road.

There will be service changes to tram routes 57, 58, 59 and 82. Buses will replace trams on routes 58 and 59.

Businesses located around the works area will remain open during the works and footpaths will remain open except for in front of the tram depot.
