Spring in the air for September rides

Spring is in the air and our social ride leaders have responded with a wide selection of rides in the next fortnight, including a special Women’s Health Week ride, and more being scheduled for coming weeks.

Pawleena Penna Circuits – Saturday 28 August

Ride leader Brian has another eastern shore route to share, with one loop taking in the water views around Orielton Lagoon, and the other exploring the rolling rural hills of Pawleena.

Meet at 9.45 am at the Sorrel Woolworths car park for the two 30 km circuits, with a coffee break between the two, getting back into Sorrel at about 12.30 pm.  If you want to just do the first loop then head off then just let Brian know when you  RSVP.

Please RSVP in case of cancellation.

Ridgley Loops – Sunday 29 August

This month’s north-west ride consists of two circuits out of Ridgley, with the first 15 km loop involving a bit of climbing and the second 9 km a more gentle up and down.

The route follows sealed rural roads the whole way, which are generally quiet on a Sunday.

Meet in the main street of Ridgley and please RSVP to ride leader Keith in case of any changes. The plan is to have lunch at Guide Falls Reserve afterwards so please BYO your food and if you want to extend your riding you can ride to lunch then back into Ridgley.

E-bike Coffee Cruise – Thursday 2 September

The E-bike Coffee Club is getting all royal with its loop of the Queens Domain and a stop to smell the roses.

This is a short ride suitable for people getting back into riding on their e-bikes and wanting to meet other riders. Make sure your tyres are wide enough to handle unsealed paths.

Meeting at Brooke Street Pier at 9.45 am, we’ll return about 11.30 am for a coffee afterwards. RSVP to ride leaders Matt and Frances in case of cancellation.

Tunnels and Bridges – Sat 4 September

This is an easy 25 km exploration of connections and shortcuts linking to the Intercity Cycleway or just nearby.

Meet at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park for the ride up along the river on a mix of quiet roads and paths around Derwent Park and Montrose before heading back along the Cycleway.

This ride is suitable for people with or without a lot of riding experience – there will be a coffee stop along the way. Please RSVP to ride leader Greg in case of cancellation.

Women on Wheels – Sun 5 September

The Lindisfarne Looper is a 40 km ride along the Foreshore Trail that starts at Simmons Park and heads to the bottom of Tranmere before returning.

This is relatively flat so a great ride for endurance without too much stress – there are some gravel sections so ensure your tyres can handle it.

Meet at 9.45 and don’t worry there will be a coffee stop for a chat along the way, but please RSVP to Ride Leader Maryanne if you intend to come in case of cancellation.

Women’s Scenic Ride to MONA – Monday 6 September

Women’s Health Week starts on Monday 6 September so we’re celebrating with a19.4 km ride that will deliver physical and mental health benefits with a ride to MONA.

Meet at 9.45 am at the upper car park at Cornelian Bay for the ride to MONA along quiet roads and paths for an interesting and varied route north. We’ll stop for a coffee and if you want to stay at the museum it’s an easy ride back along the Intercity Cycleway.

This is a fair weather ride so please RSVP to ride leader Dorothy in case of cancellation.

Cygnet Hill Top Ramble – Saturday 11 September

One of the more scenic rides in the south, join us for the 27.5 km loop out of Cygnet taking in a small hill climb and finishing with soothing water views.

The group will meet at 9.45 am in Cygnet and head along quiet hilly roads, some unsealed, to the coast of the Huon River and then around Port Cygnet back into town.

We’ll get back about 1 pm for coffee or lunch. Please RSVP to ride leader Jack

Upcoming rides & events

Social rides are featured in each edition of In the Loop, but if you want more notice visit our social rides calendar, which is regularly updated.

Bicycle Network Tasmania accredits Social Ride Leaders and requires anyone interested in leading rides to be accredited. If you would like to be one of our Ride Leaders, please email our Rides Coordinator with your contact details and what sort of riding you are interested in and we'll let you know when the next Ride Leader Skills Development Workshop is scheduled.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders are following a set of protocols to help make our rides compliant with government directions:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5 to 2 metre distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.
  • People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose.
