Substation works on Laurens Street
Substation works on Laurens Street

Riders along Laurens Street in North Melbourne will encounter minor disruption to the route in coming weeks.

CitiPower is decommissioning the old zone substation at 166 Laurens Street and need to offload power to the surrounding network.

Crews will complete underground cable jointing works directly in front of the substation, along the eastern side of Laurens Street from 24 May until 18 June 2021.

Traffic controllers will safely direct vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists around the work area.

The footpath and parking bays within the work area will be intermittently occupied by work crews.

The road will be reinstated shortly after trenching works are complete.

The works are part of a larger project involving the decommissioning of the West Melbourne Terminal Station (WMTS) located on the corner or Arden and Lloyd Street, Kensington.

It receives high voltage electricity and coverts it to lower voltages which is then distributed by CitiPower into homes and businesses.

The WMTS has reached the end of its operational life and CitiPower is working with AusNet Services to decommission the 22kV network served by the terminal station and replacing it with 66kV assets.

This also involves upgrading and decommissioning other distribution assets and zone substations across inner Melbourne.
