Pop-up bike lanes coming to Heidelberg Road

Construction has begun on Heidelberg Road to install the first of the Victorian Government’s new pop-up bike lanes.

The upgrades are part of a $13 million investment that will see the progressive installation of 100km of new and improved bike routes across inner Melbourne suburbs to help make it easier for people to ride.

People who ride through the inner-city areas of Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Moreland, Melbourne, Darebin, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip are set to benefit from improved connections, separated infrastructure, signage and markings.

The pop-up bike lanes are being developed with councils and trialled to ensure that they meet the needs of locals and can be adjusted or adapted.

The construction of a nine-kilometre pop-up bike route along Heidelberg Road starting on 7 December will help fill gaps in the network across the Merri Creek and improve connections from Alexandra Parade in Collingwood to Wingrove Street in Fairfield.

An information sheet with full details of the Heidelberg Road pop-up bike lane has been produced, including a map highlighting treatments to be made at intersections.

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we move around our communities. As Victorians prepare to return to the office, the lanes will help make it easier for more people to ride, helping to relieve congestion in inner Melbourne.

In May this year, Bicycle Network’s Pedalling to a Better Normal plan called on the state government to respond to the challenges posed by COVID-19 with the rapid roll-out of bike infrastructure and supportive policies such as minimum passing distance law.

Bicycle Network looks forward to working with the government on the development of pop up lanes across Victoria to help ensure their success.
