Bikes booming on new Bay Trail

The recently opened new section of the Bay Trail south from Mentone is going gangbusters.

No sooner had it opened than the throngs of riders and walkers were trying it out.

The success is a ringing endorsement of Kingston Council and community supporters who had to face down a desperate and dirty campaign of opposition determined to thwart the project.

Each extension of the Bay Trail has been confronted by bitter opposition, and each completed extension has been greeted with massive enthusiasm by locals and visitors alike.

Melbourne’s coastal environs are precious and people appreciate the opportunity to explore them on bike and on foot.

The recently opened stage two of the extension project extends from Mentone to Rennison Street, Parkdale.

Riders will have noticed two sections that are temporary—at Mentone Life Saving Club and Parkdale Yacht Club—that will be undertaken separately as part of car park upgrade and precinct plans.

The contracts for stage 3 of the works—from Rennison Street to Mordialloc—have been awarded and construction is anticipated to start in the July/August time frame, for completion late in 2020.

Kingston City has installed two counters on the path which verified its instant popularity.

It anticipates 11,000 people over a week in the cooler months to benefit from the path.
