Four month closure for Afton Street Bridge

The Afton Street Bridge in Aberfeldie will be closed for more than four months due to upgrades.

The closure to the popular Maribyrnong River crossing is set to kick in on Monday 2 March.

The bridge is part of a loop heavily used by walkers and runners on both sides of the river that also takes in the bridge on Raleigh Road.

It is also popular with bike riders who ride the Maribynong Trail further upriver. They will continue to have the option of using the alternative of the Raleigh Road Bridge.

Moonee Ponds City reports that the bridge, built in 1995, is in need of a revamp and from March contractors will be carrying out work to replace the old wooden decking and railing with a sturdier steel railing and slip resistant decking.

This work will make the bridge safer and help it remain strong for years to come.

The City says it realises that there is never a good time to close the structure, but by doing the work now they will avoid wet weather delays.

The re-opening is scheduled for mid-July.

Updates on the works will be reported here.
