Changes to Canning Street detour

The detour for bike riders on Canning Street in Carlton will move further north from Tuesday 29 October as City West Water progresses with water main renewal work.

Stage three of construction will see work being done on the east side of Canning between Kay and Neill Streets.

Riders heading south towards the city will need to detour via Neill and Rathdowne Streets shortly after crossing Princes Street. Be sure to take care while turning right at the roundabout at Neill Street.

After passing Palmerston Street on Rathdowne, you can then either turn left down Faraday Street to return to Canning Street, or continue along Rathdowne.

The detour will only be active between 7:30am and 10:30am on weekdays, so early birds will be able to fly straight through. There will be no change for people heading north on Canning Street.

Signs will be in place to direct riders and a traffic management team on hand to give assistance. Riders are asked to take care when riding near the work site.

This detour is expected to be in place until December when stage four of the project begins between Princes and Park Streets.

A 2.3km section of the Victorian-era M205 Carlton water main is being renewed to ensure safe and secure water supply. You can read more about the project here

A map of the detour is below and more information can be found at citywestwater.com.au/canningst.
