Metro tunnel
City Square driveway impacts night riders

The next few weeks will see some furious activity around the Metro Tunnel station site as a new driveway and site entrance are installed on Swanston Street at Flinders Lane.

There will be some disruption for bikes, and considerable changes for pedestrians.

During these works the southbound bike lane between Collins Street and Flinders Lane will be closed between 1am and 5am on the nights of Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 July.

Overall, construction activities will be underway at the location from this Sunday, 30 June until July 24.

The east west pedestrian crossing at the Swanston Street and Flinders Lane intersection will be closed during this period.

The Flinders Lane pedestrian crossing between City Square and St Paul’s Cathedral will be closed for two nights between 8pm and 7am on Sunday 30 June and Thursday 4 July

Once the night works are completed the pedestrian crossing will be realigned to enable space for a long term driveway egress from late July 2019.

Access to tram stop 11 will be maintained at all times.

From next week the construction activities – mostly during the night, but some Saturday work – will involve:

  • Installing barriers on the Swanston Street footpath to create a delineated work area
  • Demolishing a kerb and road traffic island
  • Pavement removal using an excavator with a hammer attachment
  • Installing a roller door
  • Asphalting and minor civil works to construct the new driveway

Also note that Flinders Lane will be closed between 8pm and 7am on Sunday 30 June and from Wednesday 3 to Thursday 4 July.
