New cycleway proposed around Sydney Airport

A new shared cycleway and pedestrian link has been proposed that will replace the existing link between Tempe and Mascot around the Sydney Airport as part of the $2.2 billion Sydney Gateway project.

The 1.5 kilometre track would start on the north end of Airport Dr, before crossing Alexandra Canal at North Precinct Rd and running alongside the waterway and crossing again at the pedestrian bridge to connect to the existing pathway.

This is one proposed replacement path for bike riders once Airport Drive is closed during construction and following completion of the Sydney Gateway Project.

Ahead of the Sydney Gateway Project, local bike riding and walking advocacy groups have joined together on a Change.org petition, agreeing on three important factors to consider for those who ride:

  1. A cycling and walking route along Alexandra Canal from Tempe Reserve to Coward St (equivalent to the existing facility, if not improved) during and after construction.
  2. A cycling and walking route linking the Alexandra Canal pathway with the Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal and Bayside Council’s proposed Eastern cycling network (Wentworth Ave, Mill Pond greenway, Foreshore Drive).
  3. A bicycle route linking the Alexandra Canal pathway to Sydenham Station and to Sydney Park.

Transport and Roads Minister Andrew Constance praised the community feedback as being instrumental in refining the details of the project, and encouraged the community to continue to involve themselves in concept discussions.

“The new proposed active transport route is a clear demonstration that community input leads to better outcomes," he told The Daily Telegraph.

“We encourage people to continue to provide feedback by lodging a submission to the concept design. This will further refine the project ahead of the Environmental Impact Submission, which will provide more detail and another opportunity for input."
