Loop between picture perfect Tassie towns

The North-West Riders Group is taking in Penguin and Ulverstone on Sunday 26 May, two of Tassie’s prettiest towns and one of the state’s picturesque coastal roads.

Starting at the Lions Park on Surf Club Road in Penguin at 11 am, riders will head along the coastal Penguin Road with its spectacular winding views and bracing breezes.

This is generally a quiet road, and the route for a suggested link for the north-west coastal pathway.

The ride’s mid-point is in Ulverstone, where we’ll head on to the shared path along the coast and River Leven.

From the clocktower, the route will go inland along South Road and its 275 metre ascent before rolling back down into Penguin for lunch about 1 pm. Bring your own lunch or there are plenty of takeaway food shops in the area.

For people who don’t want the South Rd challenge there is the option of returning along the coastal road.

Please RSVP before the ride so you can be contacted if it’s called off because of weather.

These rides are being offered as part of Bicycle Network Tasmania’s social rides program. Social rides are free and organised by volunteers to help riders meet new people, learn new skills and gain confidence on their bikes.

First footy bike parking

The first North Melbourne match of the year in Tassie is on Saturday 18 May against the Sydney Swans at Blundstone Arena, starting at 7.30 pm.

We’ll be offering bicycle valet parking right near the north gate for this match and others this season. Riding a bike is one of the easiest ways to get to matches without the hassle of trying to find a car park.

Blundstone Arena is right next to the Clarence Foreshore Trail so you can ride from home or park your car and ride your bike for the last few kilometres. Check out our map for places to easily park and ride.

Other matches already scheduled are daytime clashes on 16 June and 7 July.

There are many places to park and ride along the Clarence foreshore trail.

Upcoming rides

Social rides are featured in each edition of In the Loop, but if you want more notice visit our social rides calendar, which is regularly updated. Rides which have already been scheduled include:

  • Sunday 30 June – Don to Latrobe Easy Riverside Roll
  • Saturday 27 July – Mole Creek Weekend
  • Wednesday 16 October – Berry Patch Ride and Feast Seniors Week ride
  • Wednesday 16 October – E-bike coffee club goes to MONA Seniors Week ride

The strength of our social rides program depends on members volunteering to lead rides. Leading social rides is a fun way to "give back" to the riding community, and to help us to get "more people riding, more often".

Bicycle Network Tasmania accredits Social Ride Leaders, and requires anyone interested in leading rides to be accreditted. If you would like to be one of our Ride Leaders, please volunteer here and we'll let you know when the next Ride Leader Skills Development Workshop is scheduled.
