Beam lift goes full tilt

The Main Yarra Trail and Chandler Highway will be subject to periodical night closures from tonight as the final two sets of beams are lifted into place for the Chandler Highway bridge project.

On Thursday 7 June, closures will be in place for a concrete deck pour. Due to the size of the concrete pour required tonight, night works will be required for the finishing and curing of concrete.

Later, starting Friday 29 June, access to Main Yarra Trail and existing Chandler Highway bridge for cyclists and pedestrians will be closed from 7.30pm each night while beams are being lifted in.

The temporary path replacing the Main Yarra Trail under the Chandler Highway bridge will be reopened each morning.

The first beam lifts will take place on the following consecutive nights:

  • Friday 29 June: 7.30pm – 8.30am
  • Saturday 30 June: 7.30pm – 8.30am
  • Sunday 1 July: 7.30pm – 5.30am
  • Monday 2 July: 7.30pm – 5.30am

The Chandler Highway between Yarra Boulevard and Heidelberg Road will also be temporarily closed.

Detour via Chandler Highway pedestrian crossing near Yarra Boulevard: Use the pedestrian lights on Chandler Highway between Guide Dogs Victoria and Yarra Boulevard. Simply leave the Main Yarra Trail at the end of Yarra Boulevard, cross the Chandler Highway and re-join the Main Yarra Trail on the other side.

Detour via crushed rock path: Follow the diverted crushed rock path off the Main Yarra Trail toward the Yarra River and re-join the Main Yarra Trail once past the bridge.

During closures, contractors will also undertake some extra road maintenance and install new electrical, communications and drainage infrastructure. This will be done from 26 June to 7 July with some work needing to be completed overnight with traffic management in place.
