Sam Willoughby gets back on the bike

Australian BMX star Sam Willoughby is back on the bike just months after suffering a serious spinal injury.

He posted a video yesterday on his Instagram account pedalling on an exercise bike with assistance from a helper.

The 2012 Olympic medalist crashed while training in the USA in September last year and at first had no feeling from his chest down, but has been making huge recovery steps in the short time since.

On the video, Sam commented "anyone need a starter for Tokyo?". With the Tokyo Olympics still more than three years away maybe there is still time for him to make a comeback – with such an impressive recovery so far, maybe you just couldn't rule it out.

Sam was an ambassador for The Happiness Cycle, a Bicycle Network program that delivered free bikes to young Australians to help them get active. More than 11,000 bikes were given away over three years.

Bicycle Network wishes Sam all the best as he continues to recover.
