Bicycle Network: Roadies
Country Victoria presents some great opportunities for riding, especially climbing.
The hills are alive . . .
2 October 2013. The hills of Victoria will be alive to the sound of screaming legs following the listing and mapping of 800 climbs for bikes across the state.
Fanatical climber David Blom has spent a year assembling information on as many rideable climbs that he could find.
The 800 he has discovered so far are on sealed roads. He has categorised them and documented the distance, gradient, elevation gain and maximum height.
The directions to each climb are coded into the Google map he has produced that lists the climbs. The Starva segments are also linked.
The map is here and the story behind the venture is here.
The information is collected on The Climbing Cyclist website, which is playing a major role in developing the popularity of bike climbing in Victoria.
Blom started out merely looking for some extra climbs to add to the the Climbing Cyclist website, searching for lookouts and other places of interest and elevation.
He admits his simple spreadsheet grew into a monster with all the sealed road climbs with an elevation gain of more than 800 metres.
"Please note that the list is a best effort based upon maps, hearsay, satellite photos, street views, Cycle2Max and Strava details. There may well be climbs here that are not entirely accurate, owing to dodgy GPS figures, a sealed road ending suddenly, a lack of detail of maps, or there may be climbs missing all together," he wrote.
"I have just done my best to guess in the circumstances presented. I am sure that there will be more climbs to add in the future as roads get built or sealed."
He is hoping to expand this list into other states and onto dirt roads as well. He is seeking input from riders in order to update his list.
