Volunteers on anything?
My hubby and I volunteered at Forster Ironman, 2005 (the last one there) We were on the first drinks aid station out of town. It was fun, but also an education!
The lady running it was like something from Deliverance Country (I'm serious!) she screamed at her kids and went ballistic all day!! We had to fill the water bottles, then collect the ones thrown onto a collection mat, rinse them, sterilize them, rinse them then fill them and try and keep them cool in ice in the sun!! - all of this done with one hose from a toilet block and one big plastic garbage bin!! I hope there weren't too many people suffering from 'grass digestion'! A lot of the bottles seemed to end up on the grass when being filled!!
We also had to run with the bottles as the riders came through, I reckon I ran about a marathon that day. But one of the best parts was the riders heading back into town on their last lap (after 180km) slowing and thanking us and clapping and showing their appreciation. It was pretty awesome.
After our stint we drove back to town, went to the beach and cooled up then set ourselves up 2km from the end and spent the next 8 hours cheering on the competitors.
I love giving back to a sport that has given me so much - and it's an excuse not to have to race
