I was a bit apprehensive prior to the start in Albany about my level of preparation
but after finishing at MR, I reckon that the ride can be completed by anyone with a moderate level of fitness.
My biggest training run was about 46km one hot day with most weeks averaging 0 to 20km. I was competing in open water swim events though.
Once I'd started at Albany, the endorphins kicked in and the ride was more of a joy than a chore. Stopped whenever for photos, snacks wineries... and wasn't too pressed to get into the camp late morning or early arvo. Each day seemed to get easier and I felt my fitness improving - in other words I was getting less unfit.
The advantages of this training regime - 1. I didn't injure myself in the lead up to the ride, 2. I didn't wear the green machine out, 3. My level of achievement surpassed my expectations.
Anybody contemplating GBR's should just go for it.
