This year's Slog was.......interesting. Rain, wind, cold, with alternating breaks of better conditions, and then back to the nasty conditions. No hail fortunately. But some riders felt hard rain hitting their face. Sleet? Choice of clothing was very important throughout the ride – how many and what types of layers to wear.
The pot-holes were still in abundance. Riding into a puddle took some bravery, as it might contain more than just water. It could be another pot-hole lying in wait
The 150km lunch stop seemed relatively under-patronised. Some riders might have bailed at the 100km turn-off. Some might have bailed at the start. Some might not have attended, given the forecast and actual conditions. I suspect it also had a lot to do with participating riders being concerned about “seizing up” in the cold, wet conditions if they stopped for too long. Much better to grab a quick bite and keep slogging on.
The rolling hills around Strzelecki were still beautiful in the rain. However, the weather conditions made it somewhat harder to fully appreciate the vistas. Some nasty cross-winds hit riders at various locations. They appeared suddenly, especially when crossing an open ridge between some hills.
Despite the above, it was still a well organised and well supported ride. The support crew were out in the weather and staying relatively still. They might have felt the cold even more than the riders. Hats off to them.
The long ride in challenging conditions was still enjoyable
There was discussion after the ride that Dcyclist and his daughter weren't seen. Perhaps they pulled out (?) It was agreed that this would've been the right thing to do, as it might put Dcyclist's daughter off cycling. Didn't realise that you were both sick
Get well soon.
