I am a commuter who wants to be able to ride better and improve my fitness, but at present I am not sure where my fitness level lies.
The other issue (minor) is that I would be riding a CX bike with a pannier and 28mm Marathon Pluses, possibly reducing my "peak" performance (from mediocre to abysmal?)
So, what would you suggest for a starting out cyclist. Join a group ride and stay with them for as long as I can, then when I get left behind finish the ride solo?
The Cycle House shop ride on Saturday's has a no drop policy. They leave their Para Rd store at 6:30am. Take the pannier off for the safety of others in the group in case of a bingle. The 28mm tyres will slow you down due to their heavier rolling mass. Consider a second wheelset with 23mm or 25mm tyres. You don't have to have anything flash, Fulcrum 5 wheels are bulletproof but not too heavy for a group ride.
