Nobody works on my bikes except me. Not even competent mechanics. Certainly not homeless and long-term unemployed people.
I want to know what has been done, what has been adjusted how, what things are likely to need ongoing attention. There's nothing worse than getting on a bike that somebody else has "fixed" and finding everything adjusted different to how I want it. Not necessarily wrong - I wouldn't presume that anybody else wants their bike adjusted to my tastes either - but not right.
Everything mechanical is a compromise. A compromise between a bolt being too loose, and stripped. A compromise between replacing shifters that are worn out, and persevering until the cassette is also gone so I can upgrade the entire drivetrain together. A compromise between mushy brake lever feel or noisy brakes. Pedals loose enough to accidentally pull out of and pedals too tight to release in an emergency. I know what compromises I've made on my bikes, and if anything changes, I know where to look.
