I've had an offical letter back from the Minister For Transport confirming that this lane is NOT a bicycle lane. It is legal for a bicycle to ride along the left of cars if they can fit and there's a bit of a squeeze that happens up the Flinders Street end of the bridge so it's best to be in front of a car, not beside, when going through there. It is a no standing zone, so anyone dropping off or picking up a passenger is committing an offence ~$85 fine I believe. If the door being opened creates a hazard to another road user then that is an additional what is it now ~$350-ish fine even if no impact actually occurs.
Chance of anyone actually copping a fine...SFA
Even with video evidence of events shown to police in HD video, they keep telling me there is nothing they can do.
I now swerve up onto the footpath at the beginning of the bridge and kerb hop off at the other end and intend to slap anybody crossing from a car to the footpath who comes within arms-reach of me as I ride along the bike path (hasn't happened yet). There are many close calls with pedestrians near the start of the bridge as they seem to just wander wherever the hell they please. I actually had some nice video of a girl who was so engrossed in her smartphone tweeting away she was totally unaware of me track-standing in front of her she soiled herself so bad she probably lost 2kg in the process...didn't post the video up because you could say I scared her so much that I must have been doing something wrong...don't need that kind of image.
Will be soooo happy when the tin cans lose a whole lane.
