You can back off the tension on the MTB-type SPDs which will help with clip-in/out. I don’t believe there is as much emphasis on limiting wattage loss with firm foot/pedal on the dirt as you might on the road.
Riding MTB in comparison to road, you’ll find a whole lot of grey when it comes to the black & white world or road riding - Sometimes things need to slip or float or crash through, to keep the show bobbing along on the trail.
Riding MTB is what I reckon ultimately gave Cadel the edge to win the TDF, so you’ll find it’ll improve your road riding as well...
