Marg and I are driving to the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, but I think we are going the long way, we are coming from Cairns via Mount Isa and the Qld and NSW Outbacks and taking 6 months.
I have driven without the van to the Gold Coast 3 times in the past 5 years. Easy drive straight up the Newell Hwy, stopped at Gilgandra for the night at a motel, left early 6am next morning sat behind the semis until light. Swing around near Ipswich onto the Logan motorway(it's a tollway) and then head south at the Pacific Hwy to the Gold Coast. An easy 2 day drive.
I can't add anything to what the others have already told you. I only ride bike-shared paths, so I am no help to you. Unlike wagger, I ride to the spit daily, along the coastal gravel paths, that's where I encounter the snakes (Coastal Pythons and baby browns) just enough to keep you on your toes.
From 6th July to 3rd August for the past 5 years we have been staying at Dicky Beach just north of Caloudra and the weather has been beautiful, usually mid 20s. Last year while there, it rained for 3 days but still warm.
From 3rd August to 22nd Sept for the past 5 years we have been staying at Southport, again the weather is great, usually mid 20s. Even when it rains, it's still warm.
We are booked in again for this year.
Whereever you go, enjoy yourself.
