Sunbury Trophy race, C Grade
'Sat in' for the first 3 out of 4 laps, didn't think too much of the experience. Crashing through potholes, braking up climbs, dodging guys with their vest tangled in the rear wheel and dropped chains. Moved up to near the front at the start of the third lap only to find myself at the rear of the peloton in no time; it's all too easy to find yourself there. Meanwhile the legs felt like they'd done very little work.
Had enough towards the end of lap 3. Worked my way to the front and led the group up the main climb, managed a 10m gap but that was about it. Was hoping 2-3 other riders would come over but the seemed more than happy to let me go. Backed off a little and the group joined back on. Rode 'tempo' on the front for the next 5km pulling in a solo break, then had another rider offer to do some work. Worked with 3-4 other riders through the descent to the start of the main climb. Crested the top in P1 or P2, but was on the verge of throwing up. One rider went past, then another 2, then another 3. Recovered enough in the 1.5km downhill run to the finish to pull back the group of three, but they were pretty well spread across the road leaving me with 7th (I think).
With the head wind it would have been tough to have a break stay away, still maybe should have given it a go. Still much to learn.http://app.strava.com/rides/21209611
