The fact that there was a hat, a lens & cloth,a tube voltaren, a pkt nurofen, a tube of sun screen, 2 x tyre tubes shows that's it not just riders throwing out empty rubbish and wrappers without thought for the environment, its actually people loosing stuff. They might be careless but they are not necessarily thowing stuff out on purpose. I saw five gels (or wrappers, couldn't tell which) fall out of people's pockets during the ride, and only 1 of the 5 riders actually noticed it fall out of his rear pocket. They were all fishing for something else and the wrappers just fell out. Also, I didn't see anyone actually throw a wrapper away, although I'm sure some people did, but there was more "lost" than "thrown". That's not an excuse, but I see a lot of riders on forums complaining that it's everyone else but not them that drops wrappers. Anyone rider who has done 10,000 or 20,000 or 100,000 kilometres in training is unlikely to have never dropped anything. I lost my $200 sunglasses once, I had not idea which bit of the 100km ride that they fell of my back pocket on, and I would have stopped and gone back if I had known.
