In June this year I rode the Suncorp Ride 4 Research - 1000km ride in 8 days from Rockhampton to Gold Coast. We rode in teams and kept an avg of around 27km. I rode my hardtail Mountain Bike while most others were on Road Bikes.
Tyres used: GEAX Street Runner 26 x 1.25 Kevlar 30 Compound tyres (approx $40). Running high on their max of 100psi the tyres were fast, reliable in very wet and dry/rough conditions and did not a puncture - they are still running strong.
During training the same tyres but the wider 26 x 1.60s did over 5000km of hard road training, on top of the previous standard commuting around 'town' for a few months before hand - this set is still quite usable, however I kept the 1.25s on as they take a higher pressure and run faster - easier on me riding with Road Bikes.
In summary: GEAX Street Runner (Kevlar 30) are my pick of value for money, reliability for all conditions, and very good against punctures.
Puncture tip for the road - keep your tyres at their max pressure to help deflect thorns, glass, etc before they pierce the rubber.
