Bringing a bike on a plane is a lottery whether they slug you or not in regards to dimensions or weight. All I'm doing is suggesting ways to improve your odds...
Best to also print out the baggage details from the carrier you choose, in case they decide to argue the rules and these differ from what is listed online.
My experience has been that it does not matter what you have printed out, what you've been told. The person on the gate on the day makes the rules and chooses what happens. Or you find that because the airlines code share, what you have found out and written down in excruciating detail is waved aside with "those aren't our conditions" Get there early, smile a lot, keep your fingers crossed.
Another nice gotcha is that some *airports* have a special charge for bicycles or other non-standard luggage items transitting them. I got hit with this one when I had to change flights in Frankfurt.
