I'm quite familiar with the rail trail by now, having ridden it about 7-8 times on the touring bike on my way to Mt Donna Buang, and I know its surface is reasonably good, but it tends to leave a thick layer of dust on the touring bike.
I've happily ridden the railtrail to Yarra Junction with a road bike and 20mm tyres, as part of a 140+km ride through Noojee to Moe. HTFU.

I'd really like to ride the road bike up Mt Donna Buang, because I'm keen to see how much easier and faster it is, compared to the touring bike, and as I said I have plenty of previous data for comparison .
Try the long route up the Ben Cairn Road.
