Firstly Im not a bike tech, but faily good with mechanical tinkering. Two weeks ago, just b4 the family holiday of course, my rear wheel Shimanao deore FH-M525 SL (Trek 6700) broke a couple of spokes. I took the wheel off only to discover the free wheel part of the hub was not good. Local bike dealers were closing down for xmas and not interested in repair work this late on. So only solution was a new wheel the replacement was not an SL suffix, not sure what diff there is.
Ok so I got my ride and holiday done.
Now back at home I pulled apart the old hub and sure enough the drive side(right cone) was badly jammed up and pitted. This is my first quick release hub pull down and looking at info on the net the cassete hub body has a bolt needed to remove it. At this point I stopped and asked the question. Is it worth it?
Id need a new right cone, the inner cone or race is no doubt damaged too, do I need a new cassette hub body? or can the inner race be replaced like the cones?
The point is, is it worth rebuilding and having a spare wheel? I use the bike to get too and from work. For the cost of the new bits and a spare cassette, tyre etc id have a complete spare wheel. And maybe make it more road friendly?
Could I change just the cassette (CS-HG-81-10) for better top end speed or do the front cogs need changing too? in which case there is no point as Id like to keep its ability to "ride up walls" when off road.
Can I get a better hub? I mean really its only lasted me 1and a half years about 10k a day (~2500klms) from new bike. Including one service but maybe the hub was not looked at, I dont recall they mentioned that..best to start learning to check it myself.
Interested in thoughts.
