In pleasant, but slightly windy conditions, 26 riders contested round 5 (final round) of the aboc 2012-2013 Summer Sprint Series at the Blackburn velodrome.
Blackburn club members had a heavy schedule, as it was also Track Championships. Time Trials and sprints were held in the morning prior to aboc, so concession was made that BBN members had the option of using their f200 from the morning competition as their aboc qualifying time OR could ride again (but then had to use the second time). Also, if a match-up had been raced in the morning comp, by agreement, the result could be used in the afternoon comp. A few non-specialist sprinters were also following Saturdays championships of scratch, pursuits and points races.
3 BBN riders took the opportunity to complete a second f 200 (one recorded an improvement, 2 were slower), and one pair used a result from the morning comp.
There was great racing in all grades - many races wowing the crowd with tight finishes.
There were a number of riders who could have taken out the Trevor Watson prize for the series aggregate - trophy, bragging rights and a Kurt Kinetic trainer.
The Trevor Watson was claimed by a D grade rider. Newish rider. She trained. She entered every round. Her speed increased, as evidenced by improving f200 times. Her race craft improved across the season. She was on the podium every round. She wishes she had made it to the top step, rather than the second step, but she was on that podium every time.
Congratulations to Jayne for a great season of racing.
SO - if you are thinking of trying sprinting - you've got about 8 months or so till next aboc season starts. Get yourself a track bike. Get on a velo. Practice some skills. I hope to see some more of you joining us next season.
Congratulations to bleve and the aboc crew for another fun season of track sprinting.
AND did I say sausages? YUM.
