Where abouts did you stay o'night on your trip ? We are hoping (weather permitting) to do the track, Ballarat to Bendigo in a couple of weekends time. Am aiming to stay first night at Mt Franklin and are currently looking for stealth camping options near Castlemaine.
You're planning to ride the GDT from Ballarat to Mt Franklin in a day?!
Carrying camping gear?!
I humbly suggest you do a bit of a recce trip before committing. It is not easy terrain. You will be going slow.
Ballarat to Creswick and back, via the GDT, is a big day ride. For fairly experienced MTB riders, on unladen bikes.
More often, when people have to drive to/from Melbourne, I've done it with a car-shuffle (drive to Creswick, leave a car, ride to Ballarat, drive back to collect the left car). I've also done St Georges Lake (Creswick) to Eaton Dam and back as a recreational day ride, or Daylesford to the Blowhole and back in a similar vein. There's a good few hours ride time in each of those... a fun non-epic day ride.
All the rides I'm talking about are within the Ballarat - Mt Franklin leg. Plus a lot more.
Not saying that it can't be done... just saying that it would be an epic, epic day ride.
