One big BUT about the 40mm advice....
If you were still on your 400D, I wouldn't have necessarily recommended it since you've lost a few stops compared to the 50mm. But since you've got the new body where higher ISOs are completely usable, it's fine.
It is an excellent walkabout lense. Also the size, weight, focal length and image quality were the perfect compromise as a hiking lense when I was over in the states this year.
