Another question for the experts: does my choice of cassette, chain and/or front chain ring(s) depend on what brand and model of rear and front derailleur I have? I currently have a Shimano Deore LX rear derailleur (now superseded by the Deore XT if I've done my research right), and I'm guessing the front derailleur is the same brand and model, but the label on it has long since become unreadable. Here they are:
I double-checked the Shimano FC-5703 chain rings, and found that they're for 10-speed cassettes, not the 9-speed I currently have. Also, my searches for "Shimano Deore XT 9-speed chainring" keep coming up with pages describing mountain bike chain rings with e.g. 44/36/22T, not the 50/39/30 I'm looking for.
Just found this link, by searching for "Shimano Deore XT front chainwheel", as that was the phrasing used in the techdoc for Ultegra, so I guessed they'd phrase it similarly in techdocs for other brands:http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/Deore-XT/FrontDriveSystem/SIF650F/SI-F650F-En_v1_m56577569830604918.pdf
This says that for Deore XT (or LX) drivetrains, you can use FC-M751 chain rings. I then found the Shimano techdoc for these:http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/FC/EV-FC-M751-1887_v1_m56577569830611897.pdf
This still mentions 44/36/22T chain rings, but still no mention of the fact that you can use more touring bike combinations such as 50/39/30T
Now I'm thinking that the link I posted previously, for 105 10-speed chain rings, i.e. the FC-5703 series of drivetrain parts, is the correct one, even though my bike has Deore LX and not 105. Can someone confirm if I'm on the right track here, or whether I've misunderstood the compatibility issues?
. As far as I can tell, I have a MTB rear derailleur combined with the closest-compatible road bike chain rings
It seems that the Shimano FC-5603 chain ring (and other parts) series is designed for the 50/39/30T triple combination in 105 groupsets, whereas the similar FC-5600 is for doubles, so I think I'm getting the hang of these Shimano product numbers.http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/FC/EV-FC-5603-2440B_v1_m56577569830646645.pdf
