We did look at upgrading this section during our planning but unfortunately it wasn't included into the project. This was because we wanted to build as much new path as possible and locate it close to Peninsula Link, rather than upgrading existing bike paths around the area.
We've heard that the City of Greater Dandenong was keen to upgrade the section up to the EastLink Trail but we're not sure how successful they've been with funding applications. I will follow this up with them and let you know if there has been any progress
Would you happen to know anything about the status of the missing-link between Baxter and Somerville? I did find a very small piece on an online version of the Leader that mentioned it had been prioritized, but that's all I could find.
I contacted my local councilor, who was good enough to respond to say they would respond......but no response yet
As a Somerville resident that occasionally cycle commutes to Dandenong, I'm really looking forward to the Peninsula Link Trail opening, but without the last little bit to link Somerville to Baxter it's pretty useless to me personally, as the main roads from Sommie to Baxter in peak hour are simply too dangerous to risk, even for such a relatively small distance to reach the start of the bike paths at Baxter.
It seems strange to me that finishing that short section of path between two existing trails, (Baxter and the Westernport Trail to Balnarring), appears to have been overlooked and the option of running the trail to Mooroduc taken instead, which I would imagine would see a lot less cycle traffic than finishing the trail through to Balnaring would see? There's obviously some reasoning behind it though?
