The Walmer St bridge is not alright. The closure of the bridge was to do some temporary works to it, which will give it another 10 years. It really needs to be replaced. The Boroondara section of the bridge is far below standards width wise and needs to be wider. The funny thing about cyclist dismount signs is that a cyclist is much wider when they are walking with their bike which makes the narrow section of the bridge much narrower. Can you imagine two cyclist walking with their bikes on the Fairfield pipe bridge trying to get past each other. I have heard that Boroondara will be removing their cyclist dismount signs soon.
Cantilevers are expensive and you still need to get access to the area to put the foundations in (which would need to be very deep on reclaimed land)
