Today - about 12:50pm - heading south on Spring St, at Murray Rd intersection where Spring then becomes St Georges Rd (Preston).
Dear Mr Oblivious to Surroundings:
If you are going to cross on a red ped/bike light when opposing traffic has a green light, it is generally good practice to observe your surroundings carefully - especially at a slightly more 'complex' and busy intersection in the middle of the day. As I was travelling onto St Georges through the dogleg where Spring meets Murray Road, I was thankfully only doing maybe 50km/hr. I think if I had been going even a fraction faster (imagine had I been doing the limit of 60km/hr!), you would be in hospital tonight - if you were lucky. And who knows - I might have, too, had you come through the windscreen and onto me.
I cannot understand how you were not more diligent in looking for traffic coming through the intersection before moving off the ped safety island - I was IN the intersection, less than 50m from you, and drive a very hi-vis coloured vehicle. While I'm appreciative of your stopping short when you finally saw me - it was only because I braked in time that you were not hit. This is in part because I took note of the two cyclists on the island as I came through the intersection - one of them you.
And just FYI: I got a very clear look at your face when I slammed on my brakes and stopped short for you. Even though I didn't see the make of your bike, I know the general look of it, and the colour of your helmet and backpack. I ride that route very often. I will introduce myself when I see you.
So no need to say thank you now. Save it for when we meet on the St Georges path one of these days.
