Almost 20 years ago now, when our kids were toddlers, we had the same comment thrown at us by various people, cyclist and non-cyclist, about our Winchester Original child trailer.
Any time we rode it on busier roads (which we did need to at times) the traffic went right over into the other lane. We never found any problems with sideways conflicts with other vehicles. As far as visibility goes, the 'oddity' factor makes it stick out like dog's balls. Pretty much the same for a velomobile I'd guess. My brother has been commuting and doing weekend rides now in his for the past 20 months and has not been concerned by any such problems and he tends to prefer road riding to bike paths.
This velomobile rally last year in the Netherlands
is pretty amazing
