For me thermal 3/4 were excellent for road racing. Full longs were either too restrictive or too warm. But wanted to keep my knees warm and upper legs warm. Very functional IMHO.

3/4 knicks: sugio mid zeros, descente coldout roubaix (which as just about impossible to find) and two very battered pearl izumi knicks that aren't fleece lined and the chamois is just about knackered in both of them.
tights: descente coldout roubaix. you might waddle in them but the chamois is one of the best i've had. pity they're impossible to find these days!!
