Well ... I recorded the race overnight and
the highlights package this morning while I was out riding to Kinglake. Got home around 1pm had lunch, logged ride data etc, read the papers, ate some more, 2 cups of tea, and finally sat down about 2.45pm to watch the shorter highlights package. Despite posting in the Rec Ride thread I'd avoided this
thread so I didn't know the result .....
I was excited straight away to see that Cav was in the 2nd bunch 4+mins back of the lead group, and that Renshaw (Rabblebank) and at least Goss from GreenEdge were in that leading pack. Commentary was all about Nibali and Sagan until Cancellara made that break and little Gerro popped out of the pack with him. I think because he wears a slightly different jersey (Aussie champ) to the others he hides a bit from the 'copter and therefore the commentators. Once he got into the breakway with Cancellara and Nibali it was really his to win if they held off the bigger sprinters. I wasn't sure in the last km that they would do it but a little hesitation in the pack helped and as they went across the line I leapt off the couch, punched the air and shouted 'YEEESSSSSS!!!'
so suddenly that the cat nearly had kittens right there (would've been a miracle...).
What a great ride and win it was. Sympathy to Cancellara, boy he was brave to keep riding hard at the front when it was clear he could/would be beaten in a sprint by Gerrans. He could've sat up and said 'do it yourself' but he gave himself every chance. There was a big prang in the sprint behind so anything can happen... all credit to him. But Gerrans .... what an effort !!
Probably riding support to Goss initially but when the break came and Goss was at/off the back it became his race to win and he did a superb ride.
Amazing that I could go all day and not hear a squeek from anywhere about the result though - but WOW! it has made my day.
