THE peak body for cyclists has welcomed plans to create a La Trobe St bike link between Docklands and Richmond.
The Melbourne Council project - which is at the preliminary planning stage and yet to be costed - could involve extending the existing bike paths between Harbour Esplanade and William St, or may see new lanes created in the style of recent works along Swanston and Albert streets.
Bicycle Network Victoria spokesman Garry Brennan said bike riders were eagerly awaiting an official announcement with costs and completion dates.
“Large numbers of riders would use La Trobe if the street treatment was sufficiently attractive, so that means it will need to be some type of separated, Copenhagen-style lane,” Mr Brennan said.
City councillor Kevin Louey said the installation of marked lanes - on both sides of the street - could start as early as March.
“The project is conceptual at present and costs will not be confirmed until a preferred design has been finalised,” Cr Louey said...
