Did the 50km ride (with Sweet F. all training). Queued up @ 7:30am and didn't actually cross the start line until 8:50am
(heaps behind me so not sure if they got over before the 9:30am closure of the bridge access).
The 100km M-F-M riders were mixed with the 50km riders so it was a slow grind just to cross the start line.
Passed the teenage twins in the clown outfits on the uni cycles in Port Melbourne. Some may remember them from last year's event where they were featured in Ride On magazine after. Apparently they both got an individual police escort over the westgate bridge.
My 4th ride in 11 weeks so wasn't expecting anything special and delivered as I expected. Didn't struggle over the westgate and I just did a slow grind both ways. 54.8km in 3hrs 13 mins.
Rained @ Altona and started raining again just as I came off the Westgate coming back. passed one of the Hun tour teams training @ Spotswood (they were going in the opposite direction).
The head and cross winds were manageable and had worse on this year's Amy's ride.
Saw a real live celebrity. The cop on City Road, southbank near the arts centre was one of the cops from the tv show, highway patrol. Didn't stop for an autograph.
I'd say maybe 60% of the 50km riders did NOT have any form of rain jacket or wind protection. Most just wore the event top without arm warmers or jacket so they'll be a tad bit cold/ wet afterwards.
Quite a few weekend warrior type cyclists on the 50km ride and many were struggling coming back over the bridge. Their skill level matched their fitness levels. Saw a few old clunkers that were in desperate need of chain lube. Only saw one middle aged woman lying on the ground in Port Melbourne coming back. a vehicle, st john ambo and warby were inattendance. She was conscious and seemed to be a single bike accident.
Given most of the 50km riders didnt have bibnbrace knicks on, saw quite a few bum cracks and lower hairy backs (seems legs arent the only things that should be waxed prior to these rides).
Scored quite a few freebies after the event at the gobike expo so came away happy.
There seemed to be less vollies on the 50km ride this year. Wondered who the cheering groups were along city road and the start of the bridge coming back with the loud-hailers.
Apart from a case of windburn and slight dehydration feel fine otherwise.
