I hope we don't get another rain event like last year (Dec) which turned the Maindample section of the rail trail to Mansfield into an absolute quagmire. So unrideable I took to highway. The newly formed path was already heavily eroded by runoff. But it will further open up options for touring in that region either continuing north to Whitfield or heading south via Jamieson /Woods Point.
I rode the Mansfield/Bonnie Doon section during the June long weekend.
It's been resurfaced with an extra 15cm of fine hard-packed gravel (the chert mentioned in the article, which is similar in texture to the surface of the Warby trail but a dark grey in colour)and now shows no sign of the earlier damage.
I also avoided Bonnie Doon to Yark by taking Coles Rd between Woodfield and Korella before riding on around 200 metres of…
… the proposed Cathkin to Alexandra rail trail.
I too look forward to doing a complete loop of Lake Eildon when both trails are finished.
