Well, the ride there was good - once Dave went back and got me my helmet...!!
Then Dave & I rode with Penny - only got to Brighton - chatted to Caren (sp?) at Startline about nix... Suddeny realise it's 9am!!!! Head back - good ride - then a great breakfast!
Have a parcel to pick up from the Post Office, so head off for home, leaving Dave to help Penny look at something at Freedom Machine. Seems about time I do a bit of riding on my own, so this seems ok... Thru Prahran OK - out onto Malvern Rd heading for home. Just across Williams Rd there's a traffic jam - turns out to be a 4wd BMW trying to shoehorn himself into a car parking spot that's about big enough for a Mini... Could have waited for him to park (on his second attempt that I knew about) but this seemed like it could hold me up for half an hour - so I join the rest of the traffic and move out to go around him. Sounds fine so far - right??? Well, for those of you who aren't aware of the fact, there are TRAM LINES on Malvern Rd...!
And this maneouvre takes me out across one tram line - fine going out - now I KNOW about tram lines, so I took as hard an angle across as I could when I moved back into the bike area - but there were parked cars, so I only had a certain amoount of room to do it in - still, I worked hard to make the angle closer to 90 degrees than 0 degrees!
You guessed it - front wheel kicks (didn't drop in fully, but definitely NOT fun) bike starts to go down, I swear loudly, put left foot on ground, bike keeps moving forward, obviously (from battle scars) I put my right knee thru the frame onto the road and slid, and the handlebars hit the road - hard.
Pick self up and move onto footpath - put chain back on - back wheel seems to go round still - straighten handlebars - OK, let's try straightening front wheel so it points forward - hang on, something going on here.!!
Turns out that the hoods are now pointing about 45deg to the right - and maybe there's more than that happening.
So - call Dave - oh that's right, phone battery went flat... What now?
This is when I spot the two guys from the BMW standing on the footpath! So, these two guys who have just completed a fairly complicated parking process are suddenly confronted by a total stranger who wants to borrow their phone cos they just made her have an accident and now she can't ride home...
Well, basically they took it quite well - let me borrow the phone (no one answered the phone of course) then offered to drive me home (tho he couldn't get the car out until one of the other cars moved, believe me) then bought me a coffee. Once we'd all calmed down (well, I had anyway) we chatted - turns out the driver has just bought himself and the Mrs mountain bikes with his frequent flyer points (he's happy there aren't any tram lines in Portarlington) and when the coffee was finished, I called home and Robyn came and collected me and bent bike. Straight to Bike Life (Dean said it's always a worry when someone comes in carrying their bike over their shoulder!) for a complete check up before I get it back again...
Oz was here with Dave when Robyn and I got back, so he will post pics of the war wound!
