Just after the bit where the Freeway, train line, Gardiners Crk Path and High Street cross, you have to climb a reasonably steep hill around two twisty corners, where people tend to drive rather quickly. Outbound, there's not much else of note along High Street.
I ride up that twisty bit most afternoons after ditching the Gardiner's Creek Trail (might even be Scotchman's by that point). The traffic can get a bit hairy but if you stayed single file it wouldn't be a problem. The shops in Ashburton are a different issue, have lost count of the number of times cars have u-turned in front of me there.

That's the good way in, Waverley Rd has some nice wide lanes and is generally quiet once past Blackburn Rd. There are some rather steep hills but you're going to encounter them regardless, but if you go up Waverley then you also get that great downhill leading into the park, no entering roads on the left means you can take the lane and see how fast you can hit... 50km/h, cos that's the speed limit and it's just irresponsible and illegal to go any faster (it's the quickest downhill aceleration I've ever experienced on a bike, but you'll need a taxi to get back up so instead sweep around and head to FTG, much nicer on the legs...)
