Thanks all for the ride yesterday. I had a great time.
Unfortunately I didn't have much luck with trains at the start of the day - missed the train at Hampton by a minute or so
... but luckily the 2 mins changeover at Richmond was enough time to get on the Belgrave bound train
Thanks to schwarz for waiting for me at Ringwood station, so we could catch the train together to Lilydale. After a welcome toilet break at Lilydale Lake (after 1 hr 40 mins of travelling, as a result of the missed train), we rode up the hill to the rail trail and onto Cogs at Mt Evelyn where we met everyone else.
From there, it was a welcome downhill for a while. After a couple of regroups, we stopped at the Seville railway carriage cafe for a snack. The egg and bacon muffin seemed a popular choice! I enjoyed a hot chocolate and 1/2 a blueberry muffin. (Cat was undecided when her mum asked her whether she wanted a muffin or not, so we shared a muffin.)
Not long after Seville, I stopped to take a couple of photos of Killara station ... then had to chase and chase and chase to catch up to everyone else. When I eventually did, we discovered that schwarz, Dale and someone else were further behind. Turns out that the funny "I don't want to change gears" noises that Dale's bike was making as we left Seville was a snapped front derailleur cable
Nothing that a well chosen width of stick wouldn't fix!!
From there, we had a short stop at Yarra Junction, before riding onto Warburton for lunch. I certainly enjoyed my two cheese rolls
After lunch, there was the option to do an 11 km scenic loop around Warburton ... but everyone (except vicjane) were happy to return straight to Lilydale, so that's what we did. Before we left, Yogibear (wearing an orange ATB jersey, like Dale was ... bit of a orange ATB jersey = mechanical theme here
) had to change tubes due to a slow leak. Once his bike was up and going again, we set off. Only for the puncture fairy to strike Cat. I was last at this point, but Atom Ant was just down the path ... so I got him before continuing on my way to Yarra Junction where everyone else was waiting. Eventually Cat and Atom Ant reappeared (after JAC had gone back to check on the rest of her family), so we were on our way again.
Until Cat had another puncture, so the slow group had another welcome rest / wait. Shortly before this puncture stop, I'd seen a familiar light just after one of the bridges, so stopped to pick it up. I asked everyone - lost a light? squeaza checked her saddle bag ... oh wait, yes I have!! It was the one I'd picked up
After the restart, I was feeling pretty tired, so just rode along at a comfortable pace. We stopped at the Seville cafe on the way back as well, but I didn't feel like a hot chocolate this time, so enjoyed the banana that I'd brought along with me
Thankfully I started to pick up after that (maybe I hadn't eaten enough, despite eating all day in the heat), so the climb up to Mt Evelyn wasn't too bad. My HR only got to 162 bpm, which is way off my max
I started a trend at Cogs on the way back ... 90 cent Paddle Pop lemonade icy pole, which really filled the spot
From there, we farewelled everyone who'd parked at Cog, and the squeazas, schwarz, myself and yogibear? (one of the two in orange) headed to the end of the trail, and along the highway to Lilydale station.
Obviously my bad luck with trains earlier in the day, turned into good luck at Lilydale station ... cos the 5:59 pm Flinders St train was still waiting at the platform, after 6 pm, so we managed to catch that. Squeaza used her iPhone to check the Sandringham train times for me - and I knew it'd be potentially tight, depending on how late the late Lilydale -> Flinders St train actually was.
As it turned out, the train from Lilydale pulled into Richmond as I saw the Sandringham train arriving. After a frantic run down and up the ramp, I managed to get the Sandringham train ... just!
What about the stats?
The bike computer on my hybrid (Army) hasn't been working for a while, and now has a flat battery
So I was flying "blind", so to speak.
It was definitely weird riding along without knowing what speed I was riding at! (Even my track bike has a speedo now ...)
I did, however, have my HRM on. From those stats, I know that I was taking it very easy indeed, and mainly having a pootle
The approximate 80 km from Lilydale to Warburton return is definitely the furthest I've ridden for ages ... and definitely further than I've ridden on my hybrid with ages.
(Made easier by changing to cleats for the trip, and schwarz adjusting the tension of the quick release, so I no longer have a seat that needs adjusting every few km ... so shorter than the trip to Cheltenham which is my most common hybrid-commuting-bike destination.)

Well done to Cat for riding such a long way - with "normal" pedals and sneakers, rather than cleats!!
Photos to come, once I've uploaded the good ones tomorrow.
