On the playTV discussion, I now have mine hooked up and running. Gotta say, combine PS3 with this and Im not entirely sure why anyone would buy a Tivo now.
SBS is a non issue if you select Australia as your country AFAIK. Even if you bought the grey import model, you should (but I cant say for certain) be able to upgrade the firmware. Selecting Australia makes it compliant with freeview legislation (i.e. you cant transfer recordings, cant fast forward at the highest speed) but switching between Australia and other can bypass the exporting recordings thing so I have been told (yet to try that part yet).
If your really bored have a read of this
. 34 pages of Playtv discussion on whirlpool. And thats the 6th thread
As for Hard drive, you can upgrade it in the newer models without voiding your warranty. Is a standard Laptop drive, which you can get up to 600gb now (yes, you can get up to 1tb but they are a bees pecker larger in dimension and will not fit into a ps3).
So now im set. Bought the sony bluray remote, playtv comes with an overlay sticker for it and away you go. Have had stuttering on occasion, but that's more my crappy signal than the Playtv.
Only thing I have found frustrating is remembering to add in extra time to a recording, nothing ever starts/finishes on time. GLW found out the hard way when she missed the last 2 minutes of Greys
. Tivo automatically builds in a buffer, but according to a mate that has one its only 5 minutes which is still missing the end of some shows for him. PlayTV allows you to set your own buffer at start and end (max 10 minutes from memory).
All in all, the PS3 has got to be one of the better investments I have made. Stores music/video, streams media, gaming (including free online gaming,
to Xbox), web access, PlayTV, Bluray, wireless (although the wireless in them is average, hardwire if you can) upgradeable hard drive, updates itself. And it only owes me a shade over $600 (with Playtv). Call it $750 with second controller, bluray remote and charging stand for the controllers. If only the damn thing had rear USB like the older models.
